A catcher’s gear set can’t be complete unless the catcher owns a very sturdy catcher’s mitt. Unlike all other positions on the field, the catcher will take the most punishment in their hand and palm areas due to the nature of the position. If you make the assumption that 100 pitches are thrown in a game, and the batter will make contact with one-third of the pitches than the catcher is left with having two-thirds of all pitches pounding against their hand and wrist area.

Like regular catchers gloves, a youth catcher’s mitt is bigger than the other gloves worn by other positional players. This is because a catcher’s mitt contains a much larger pocket allowing the catcher to feel the baseball as little as possible in their palm and hand areas. It’s very important to stay as a safe as possible behind the plate, and so a new glove with padding intact is probably your best route. When wearing a worn out catcher’s glove, you can feel the ball hitting against your hand each and every time. Going without good padding is almost the same as playing without a glove! Youth Catchers Mitt Sizing

The sizing of a catcher’s mitt is a bit different than with a regular mitt as the catcher’s mitt is measured using the circumference instead of the length. Most you sized catchers mitts run the range of 30 inches to 33 inches (in ½ inch increments) depending on the size of the individual. Catchers mitts can go all the way up to 34.5 inches for adult sizes. If you have a regular glove, you can determine your catcher’s mitt size by performing the following steps:

• Measure from the top of the index finger on the glove to the heel. Round this measurement to the nearest inch.
• Take this size, and subtract it from 12.5 (the largest regular glove size).
• Using this new number, subtract it from 34.5 (the largest catcher’s mitt size).
• Take this number and find the perfect mitt for you!
